When copper grows legs...

ACT Policing is investigating the theft of 120 metres of copper cable from a building site in Lyneham on Monday night (20 December).

Police believe the offenders scaled a crane on the site sometime between 9pm Monday and 6am Tuesday (21 December). The offenders cut 4 x 30 metre lengths of cable from about 40 metres above the ground, the value exceeding $15,000. It is suspected that the offenders parked their vehicle down a back lane attached to the site.

Police believe a lot of noise would have been made during the removal of the copper and would require multiple people to lift it.

Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area around the time of the offence or who may be able to assist police with the investigation are asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

I checked google and apparently this would have been committed by meth users and probably already on a boat for the Asian black market. So police should start there.

Would it not be possible to ask scrap metal dealers to keep an eye out for 3 x 40 metre lengths of copper cable being offered for sale?

Don’t worry, the scrap metal dealers will be on the lookout. They know they’ll make a quick profit when they buy it cheap because it is stolen…

“Yes and no… The gates which prevent you driving in come and go, but you can park on the road and wander in no worries. Take a friend and keep your eyes open though, because in addition to lots of recent evidence of cable theft, I saw some pretty dodgy looking people doing something dodgy down the bottom of the paddock with a couple dodgy vehicles.”

Would definitely keep my eyes open while wandering around and plan on taking the bro with me to keep me company! Thanks for the reply p1 – will let you know of my adventures and if I see any dodgy behaviour! 🙂

Yes and no… The gates which prevent you driving in come and go, but you can park on the road and wander in no worries. Take a friend and keep your eyes open though, because in addition to lots of recent evidence of cable theft, I saw some pretty dodgy looking people doing something dodgy down the bottom of the paddock with a couple dodgy vehicles.

[Dodgyness solely the opinion of p1. Actions may have been totally innocent and harmless. Although they were taking place hidden in the bush surrounded by evidence of illegal behaviour…]

Only one crane that size in Lyneham at the moment. At Axis Apartments, corner of Mouat st and Northbourne.

It may help if the release actually, I don’t know, told us where the ‘area’ actually is – saying its in Lyneham and showing us a crane doesn’t necessarily help

For a moment there I thought I was suffering deja vu…. Guess not.

April 2009 – $90,000 worth of copper wire stolen from a building site in Phillip.

May 2007 – $60,000 worth of copper wire stolen from a building site in Barton.

Would it be fair to speculate that the same people did it?
