Worksafe have noticed it’s bloody hot outside:
Climbing temperatures this week have prompted an urgent warning from the Work Safety Commissioner, Mr Mark McCabe, reminding employers of the risks associated with extreme heat.
ACT employers are being urged to consider thermal comfort and sun safety in assessing the risk associated with business as usual.
“People who may be at risk include anyone working outdoors. We need to think more broadly about who is affected by heat hazards. Construction and road workers must take precautions and adapt work practices in hot conditions however this also applies to other groups, for example people in child care or working at sport and recreation venues and mobile health professionals,” said Mr McCabe.
“Employers also need to be aware of what is expected of young people in the workforce. They often work casual hours during really busy times in hospitality and recreational venues. Thinking about the effect of heat and the sun may be the last thing on their mind.
“I strongly recommend a number of heat safety strategies including regular breaks away from hot environments, ensuring plenty of water is available as well as sun protection and a willingness to change work practices to suit the conditions.
