Chief Minister Gallagher has announced progress in her long way against smokers wherever they might hide:
“As part of Floriade’s move to become a smoke-free event, signs have been installed in areas frequented by children, such as Kids Corner and Carnival Corner, requesting that patrons not smoke in this area.
“Smoking is also not permitted in enclosed spaces and at outdoor eating and drinking areas in the ACT. This applies to the marquees and dining areas throughout Floriade including Cafe Valenti and the Butterfly Lounge,” she added.
“This is a great initiative and it is even more encouraging to know that Floriade organisers are working towards making the entire event site smoke-free in the future.
About time too.
Let’s hope this initiative extends to the staff operating the Ferris Wheel this year…in past years (such as last year) they puffed away on ciggies as they helped people in and out of the gondolas…bless them.
Fantastic news! People who smoke are too stupid to understand their actions so we must take every opportunity to alienate them until they conform.
I know I might be pounced on immediately here but….good. Nothing like fresh air.
Hurry for Chief Minister Gallagher, can’t wait till all public places are smoke free!
I dont see the problem. Asking people to not smoke in the “Kids Corner” seems reasonable.
As I look out my window at the lingering blue haze from last week’s fire in Mitchell, I can’t help but laugh at how ironic this is.

Most cigs just smoulder. The Mitchel fire would have been like an incinerator, pretty much splitting everything to the base components.
Plus Mitchel only really effected the north side, us who live down south still have our health to protect!

lol!
I assumed it was already a smoke-free event.

Kids Corner and Carnival Corner go smoke free, and we’re talking about the smoke nazis? Please…

Taking away a carny’s right to smoke would cause nothing but mayhem.
No smoke for you!
Well, somebody had to say it

You WILL be assimilated resistance is futile.
Katie had her whining tone on this morning on radio – she wants all of Floriade to be smoke-free at all times. There’s a risk of an element of classism here folks – in general, it’s middle-class people who don’t smoke. The underclass and the bohemians smoke. I don’t smoke, but I don’t mind people smoking near me if it’s out of doors and I’m not eating.
Isn’t smoking outdoors in the lovely spring air (especially surrounded by flowers at Floriade) a bit like drinking goon at a winery. People come for the smell of flowers, not cigarettes.
What about the following signs as well;
NO DRUGS
NO STEALING
NO PORN
NO WEAPONS
NO ALCOHOL
NO FLOWERS

That’s a bit rough! Sounds a bit like you would like to Taser them ‘for their own good’ every time they light up. Unless you’re being sarcastic, of course, and I’m being stupid. (And I don’t even smoke. Might as well take it up.)

Yes and they should ban coffee too. The aroma just distracts us from the floral perfume.

Here! Here!
10 years ago if you were told smoking would be banned in clubs etc-you would have not believed it.So let us start a group to eliminate Coffee in public places.MINORITY GROUPS RULE!!
P.S Look what has happened to Christmas and the like.who would have thunk it.
I wonder if Katie can make the Summernats Burnout pad ‘smoke free’ ?

So, where’s the problem with discouraging the ‘underclass’ from destroying their health and finances?
Or for that matter, in making bohemians miserable?
IIRC about 20% of Canberran smoke – if only half the non-smokers hate the smell, then for every smoker there are 2 people who hate it.
Good to see. The sooner they ban smoking in public places the better.

Simple, ban smoking, kill thousands of birds with one stone.

Great idea. It worked so well with prohibition in the US and it works so well with other drugs everywhere!
Good idea, keeps the costs of cleaning Floriade down. Anywhere where smokers are allowed they will soil the place with their butts and packets. Anyone who has so little self care as to poison themselves with tobacco, will not care what he spoils for other people. Smokers are filthy, they do not care if they make Floraide filthy.
“Fantastic news! People who smoke are too stupid to understand their actions so we must take every opportunity to alienate them until they conform.”
Yeah, smokers should be put in government run re-education camps and not allowed back into society until they are cured of their filthy addiction.
Governments should get the police to enforce bans on smoking and anyone caught smoking should be charged and then found guilty.
The sooner it happens the better for the world.

The amount of revenue the government makes from tobacco might actually make them not consider that idea. But sure, tax the sales of it, then fine the person using it, perfect system, ah it’s here already! Yeah get Police to use our taxpayers money chasing people around who dare to pay the government tax for their smokes, smart idea. These re-education camps you mention will probably need to be funded with tax revenue from tobacco sales ironically.
