UPDATE 23 May – ACT Policing has confirmed the human remains found at Point Hut Crossing earlier this month belong to missing Gordon man Timothy Lyons.

The 38-year-old was first reported missing in December, 2023.

His death isn’t being treated as suspicious at this time.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.

6 May – Detectives are working off the theory that human remains found by joggers near Point Hut Crossing belong to missing Canberra man Tim Lyons.

Two people discovered the remains late yesterday (5 May) with forensic, homicide and search and rescue officers descending on the scene.

Detective Superintendent in Charge of ACT Criminal Investigations Hall O’Meagher said while a formal identification hadn’t occurred yet, police had asked members of Mr Lyons’ family for DNA to forensically confirm what they suspect to be true.

“It’s a distinct possibility that this deceased person is, in fact, Tim Lyons, the person who went missing in that area in December 2023,” he said.

Mr Lyons was last seen at his Gordon home on 19 December with searches focused on the Tuggeranong area.

SES volunteers have previously conducted line searches in the vicinity of Mount Taylor, about 10 km north of Point Hut Crossing.

The 38-year-old was believed to have been carrying a leopard-print blanket and other bedding when he went missing.

Det Supt O’Meagher wouldn’t confirm if they were among the other items found alongside the remains.

“There were a number of items that were located where the remains were found that will assist us with our inquiries and the formal identification of the deceased person,” he said.

“It is evident from the early investigations that the human remains have been in situ for some time, at least a number of months.

“There’s nothing specific evidence-wise to suggest there is anything suspicious, but we’re keeping an open mind.”

The cause of death and how the remains came to be at Point Hut Crossing are unknown and are avenues of inquiry being pursued by police.

Det Supt O’Meagher appealed to all members of the public to get in touch if they thought they had any information about the human remains or Mr Lyons.

“If you were in the area of Point Hut Crossing in the past couple of months, and there’s something that you think is relevant to us, please call us,” he said.

“If you know something about missing man Tim Lyons, and how he potentially came to be at that location, please call us and provide us with that information.”

Parts of the Point Hut Crossing area have been closed as police continue to search the area, but it is expected to be re-opened to the public later in the week.

Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting reference P2253080. Information can be provided anonymously.
