Quite a large number of shrubs and trees, 1100 to be precise, have been planted around Lake Ginninderra in an effort to revitalise the lake.
Michael Brice, Manager of Urban Treescapes in Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS), says the new plantings were part of a three phased project.
“Last year, we identified a degraded area at the lake near Coulter Drive with many ageing trees and shrubs. TAMS devised a three phased scheme to re-invigorate the area that included removing dead and dying trees and shrubs, mulching and re-planting new trees and shrubs and managing weeds and undesirable seedlings over the next few years,” Mr Brice said.
“The new local and endemic species will create a woodland effect that will enhance the area for native wildlife and add value to the ecology of the area.”
The tree species used include: buttle gum, scribble gum, red box, apple box, snow gum, while shrubs including: wattles, bottle brush, banksia and grevillea have also been planted.
