Plans to cut speeds in the parliamentary zone are going ahead, with the National Capital Authority aiming to have the new speed restrictions in place by the end of the year reports ABC news.
The NCA previously flagged it wanted to reduce speed limits from 60 to 40 kilometres per hour in the parliamentary zone bordered by Commonwealth Avenue, State Circle, Kings Avenue and Lake Burley Griffin.
NCA chief executive Gary Rake has told a community forum the plan is going ahead, and new pedestrian crossing and road surfaces are also being considered.
“This is not a high speed transit way, this is a place that we want people walking and cycling safely,” he said.
There has been no formal community consultation about the change and some Canberra residents are not happy.
They are concerned the lower speed limit will increase traffic congestion.
But Mr Rake says traffic modelling shows that will not happen.
