Andrew Barr has announced that the last Gallery blockbuster for 2013 will be: Gold and the Incas: Lost worlds of Peru.:
This new exhibition – which I launched this morning – is a one-off exclusive to Canberra. It will open in December and run over the first three months of next year.
It will provide another compelling reason for visitors to come to the ACT from around Australia and around the globe, and also ensure our Centenary celebrations go out with a bang.
Gold and the Incas: Lost worlds of Peru will feature more than 200 objects of the pre-Hispanic cultures of Peru, transporting visitors back in time to the Incan empire and their predecessors.
Art made of gold, silver, turquoise, stone, textiles and ceramics will be featured, including large stone calendars, full-size gold armour, intricate jewellery, and elaborate embroidered and woven cloths.
One can only hope the Gallery gets over its aversion to history and give the visitors some historic context.
$500,000 in ACT Government money going towards it and there is already a webpage.
