John Hargreaves has proudly announced the closure of the Black Hole of Belconnen, aka the Belconnen Remand Centre.
- Minister for Corrections John Hargreaves MLA today announced that all prisoners from Belconnen Remand Centre (BRC) have been moved to the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC). This means all ACT-based prisoners are now occupying the AMC.
“I am delighted the archaic BRC can now be closed. The facilities’ long-standing issues of overcrowding and poor living conditions have been of concern to me since 1998 when I first encouraged the then Liberal Government to build a prison here in the ACT,” Mr Hargreaves said.
“Prisoners from the BRC have been progressively moved without incident over the past few weeks. I am pleased to report that the majority have already commenced work placements, vocational education and training programs, as well as assessment for individual rehabilitation plans.
With BRC empty apparently the real fun is about to begin with the hard cases locked up in the NSW system coming home to test the facilities of the Hume Hilton.
