The Canberra Hospital is set to develop a new Paediatric Emergency Department, thanks to a $5 million commitment in the Federal budget, according to The Canberra Times.
For all of those parents who have sat in emergency with sick kids, sharing a crowded waiting room and hoping one of the 6 paediatric beds will come available soon will hopefully find the experience a little easier soon.
Federal Health Minister Peter Dutton has promised the funding this financial year to get the project moving.
‘The introduction of paediatric streaming in ED will provide early identification of paediatric patients who are waiting for care and the quick transfer of those patients to the appropriate services in the new Centenary Hospital for Women and Children. These are the first steps towards establishing a genuine paediatric stream,’ he said.
Once open, the only ED area that will be shared by adults and children is the resuscitation room due to it’s highly specialised nature.
Construction is expected to start in November and due to complete in September next year.
