Gary Humphries stripped of Liberals Award

The Canberra Times has a story today about former ACT Liberal Senator Gary Humphries being stripped of a distinguished service award because he wrote an opinion piece that publicly said the party needed to change direction to improve its chances of winning government at the next election.

It all seems very petty, vindictive and stupid to me. The party is supposed to value free speech, which is why Brandis wants to change the law, but if you offer constructive criticism you get attacked. If the current management people can’t work with other members of the same party, how are they going to appeal to voters at the next election.

I’m no fan of the ACT Labor government, but I’m starting to reconcile myself to them being in government until at least 2020.

If you really think that GH “deserves something better” then why not get your Labor comrades to give him an award to replace the Liberal one he has just lost?
I am sure there would be some old Lenin Medals gathering dust at your HQ.

Recycle the one allegedly given to Manning-Clarke?

There is certainly some doubt as to whether he received one or not. There is no doubt that he was the doyen of the Marxists in Australia. What there is also no doubt about is that he wrote more about Australian history than anyone else of note; even the great Geoffrey Blainey praised his work.
It appears that John Hargreaves is trying to emulate the tomes of Clarke on this blog. God help us.

When all is said and done, Gary served his Party well over a long time. And while I think he is ideologically challenged, he deserves that recognition and the award. This more personal than ideological and has nothing to do with loyalty. It is all about power and the retention of it.

Killing Gary seems to be the Liberal Party’s sport for 2014. From a Labor perspective, I say keep it up guys, you are entertaining in a lemming kinda way.

From a Liberal perspective, Gary is not a popular first name at the moment.
Of course from a Labor perspective, Gillard replacing Rudd, then Rudd replacing Gillard was simply the way the left does business.

BUT… How far right do you go before you fall off the edge of the known world, a truth I’m sure is espoused by those massive far righties currently imposing their will on us. Gary was never this much of a zealot and he deserves better.

Part of the swing towards the looney right that has been in progress since the Howard years. The Liberal party is a long way from where it was under Menzies, Holt, Gorton & Fraser.

As is the Labor Party a long way from Chifley and Curtin?

Given that the Labor party of Chifley and Curtin was a genuine, 100%, real-life socialist party, that’s not really surprising. Today’s Labor party is probably to the right of Menzies’s Liberals. That’s why the Greens have appeared in the gap opening at the left.

In a way, yes. In another way, the German liberals, decades back, offered themselves as going beyond the left-right paradigm. Not sure that applies universally, or now, enough, but there seems not enough “keep the b$%#$*ds honest” factor, and all up I tire of the left-right paradigm anyway, there ought to be more to it than that.

Is there anyone posting on this thread who isn’t pretending NOT to be a Liberal Party member?

I’m not pretending to not be a member of the Liberal party……hang on, ..what?

Do the local Libs have a death wish? They sacked Gaz and preselected Zed resulting in The Greens almost winning the Senate seat at the last election despite the national swing to the Coalition. With this latest incident, as well as an anticipated swing to Labor and The Greens at the next election, the Canberra Libs might find that they have no representatives in the Federal parliament.

The Menzies Group Facebook Page wishes to state categorically there is no substance whatsoever to the allegation that ACT Policing is presently investigating an instance of email hacking perpetrated by one of our members.

This rumour has been circulated inside the party by a small group of disaffected factional operatives who oppose the present call for party reform and the broader reform objectives of the Menzies Group.

The Menzies Group shares Party President, Peter Collins’ disappointment these members are seeking to use former Senator Humphries as a means of furthering their own personal agendas inside the party.

We would call on those behind this article to relent from these public attacks on party members and to focus their efforts on supporting the party reform so sorely needed by the Canberra Liberals.

I’m pretty sure that punishing those people who don’t agree with them is a central tenet of the coalition.
