Cheap parking in Civic during weekdays?

I’m hoping the RA brains trust will be able to help me out here…

Where are the best (by this I mean cheapest) places to park Monday to Friday in/around the city? I’m not averse to a bit of a walk each way if it means saving a few thousand a year!

Alternatively, does anyone have experience parking somewhere relatively safe in inner city suburbs and catching the bus for the final part of the trip? I will be travelling from Jerrabomberra if that helps.

I recognise this question has been asked a few times already, but was unable to find anything recent (particularly after the introduction of PP in the Parliamentary Triangle last year).

Get a motorbike or at least get something over 250cc. Safer and more stable on Canberra’s higher-speed trunk roads. Gives you the option to rapidly accelerate out of a bad situation and lets you make the most of lane filtering. Bigger wheels negotiate bumps better, provide more road surface, and improve centre of gravity, and legs over instead of forward allows for more dynamic weight distribution which offers better chance of recovery in a skid. Small scooters are fun in lower speed areas, and inner city areas. But in Queanbeyan you’ve got roads like Pialligo Ave, Monaro and Canberra Ave to contend with, lined with bush and roos. You don’t want to be sitting on 90km full throttle on Monaro on a squirrelly 125cc caged in between b-doubles, or unable to accelerate out of someone’s blind spot.

And don’t stick a kid on the back. Once you start to get a real taste of the random idiocy out there, you won’t want to.

Motorbikes are the go!

They don’t have speed limits, are allowed to overtake on the left, and they have their own dedicated lanes, marked with white dashes in between all the other vehicles stuck in traffic. 😀

They also are a great way to locate all the black ice on Canberra’s roads in mid winter.

Could ACTION have an opportunity to extend their reach? ACTION-owned car parks could actually make current parking rates much, much cheaper than they are now, as well as making a profit 5 years after carparks are built completely (my estimate: 8 years simultaneous building time, some small, some large) and reduce congestion significantly, combined with collaboration with the car park systems for efficient traversal to destinations.

Pipe dream, perhaps..

Gumtree, eBay, Allclassifieds. Unless of course your interpretation of “decent” is absurdly high. Plenty of good bikes around but you have to be quick. Take too long to think about it and it’ll be gone.

Or get a Toyota i-road and confuse everyone when you park it in the motorcycle bay.

Argue it’s basically a Piaggio mp3 with a roof.

As a resident in on of the the nearby suburbs who can’t get trademen to come because they can’t park anywhere I hope you find your parking away from Civic and close to a Rapid bus line and use the bus.
