Lovers of art and the great outdoors are getting the chance to experience both at the same time with the artist-in-residence open day at Namadgi National Park this Saturday 19 September 2015.
“The open day event will give members of the public a chance to meet Craft ACT’s 2015 artists-in-residence for an insight into their art and the influence of nature on their work on site at Gudgenby Ready-Cut Cottage in the Namadgi National Park,” Manager of Regional Operations, National Parks and Catchments, Brett McNamara, said.
“The artist-in-residence initiative supports a national artist, and an international artist to stay at the cottage so they can experience the beauty of nature first hand.
“The theme for this year’s program, Connect with Your Nature, was developed from the Healthy Parks Healthy People philosophy. The two artists taking part, Canberra textile artist and Craft ACT member Ruth Hingston and UK metalsmith Jodie Hatcher, will use their time in Namadgi as inspiration for their own connection with nature.
“Ruth Hingston’s art is based in textiles, drawing, illustration, and fashion and is well known for her Canberra Life embroideries. Jodie Hatcher is an emerging designer-maker based in Sheffield, England. Her work focuses on the exploration of weaving processes and how this textile technique can be used within the metal working tradition to produce sculptural objects.
“A bus will take visitors from Civic Square at 9 am to Gudgenby Ready-Cut Cottage at Namadgi National Park. Visitors are encouraged to bring a packed lunch and thermos, and soak in the gorgeous natural surrounds of Tidbinbilla, before being transported back to Civic Square by around 2 pm.
“The open day has been organised by Craft ACT, in partnership with the ACT Parks and Conservation Service and the National Archives of Australia.”
