Actor, writer and director Christopher Carroll has been named the Capital Arts Patrons’ Organisation’s (CAPO) 2024 Fellow.
The CAPO Fellowship, which is valued at up to $15,000, is presented annually for an art project by a new or emerging artist.
As 2024 Fellow, Mr Carroll will work on Crims, a theatre work based on real-life stories from Sydney’s criminal underworld in the early 1900s.
This award, and others, were announced earlier this month at the CAPO awards night held at the Grainger Gallery. They were presented by CAPO Patron Genevieve Jacobs and the awards’ respective sponsors.

Mandy Martin Art & Environment award: Erica Secombe for a new work exploring laser-cuts and AI imagery depicting the melting and majesty of icebergs.
Rosalie Gascoigne Memorial award: Surya Bajracharya for a residency at Megalo to explore contemporary interpretations of still life and memento mori through lithography.
Megalo Residency award: Sophie Dumaresq for an animatronic six-metre-long shark that will perform alongside the artist for BLAZE 2025.
Robert Foster Memorial award: Rosalind Lemoh for a contemporary sculpture in metal and glass inspired by a historic house and gallery in Sydney.
Tall Foundation award: Elsa Uber for audiovisual recordings of herself singing with a pianist to help with professional development opportunities.
Shaw and Partners award: Alice van Meurs for a new clothing collection with artist Sarrita King.
Michele Black Memorial award – Creations Manuka: Apeiron Baroque.
Craft + Design Canberra Outstanding Practice award: Sarit Cohen to develop new forms by building plaster cast moulds for larger work.
Waldren Constructions general award: Belinda Jessup for a solo exhibition of machine-embroidered textiles focusing on birds and trees of the ACT.
Capital Chemist award: Sammy Hawker to finalise production of solo shows – Conversations with Bees at Goulburn Regional Gallery and Ghosts [& Monsters] at Orange Regional Gallery.
Workplace Research Associates award: Kevin Bradley for stringed musical instrument construction.
Emerging artist awards were presented to: Musician Micah Heathwood, Emily Kerr for her work in procelain and Sophie Constable for a community memorial artwork.
Urban Pantry Manuka Emerging Artist award: Writer Jemina Parker.
Canberra Weekly award: John Brookes for a multi-media work.
home.byholly award: Nigel Dobson to support a three-month residency in Paris in 2025.
Radford & Co Sculpture award: Madisyn Zabel to support a solo glassworks exhibition at Woollahra Gallery.
Cook Creative Writing Prize: Maura Pierlot for a chapbook, The Archaeology of Loss.
Craft + Design Canberra Emerging Artist award: Emily Kerr.
Boris Property Emerging Artist award: Lesley Andersen.
The CAPO Fellowship is jointly funded through the sale of donated art and business items at its annual fundraiser and auction which was held on 9 November.
A volunteer non-profit organisation, CAPO has supported the ACT region’s artists for more than 40 years. Since its establishment in 1983, it has granted more than $4 million in arts fellowships and awards with support from the Canberra arts and business communities.
