With Christmas just around the corner, we all have to face the perennial problem of trying to find the perfect gift for the people in our lives. But as you walk around a typical shopping centre, it feels like people have already bought themselves all the gift ideas you could possibly have. So is there another way?
What about a place where you could find gifts that were beautiful, personal, and very different to what you find in the shopping centre? Well, I ventured to the Bus Depot Markets to see what I could find.
For the stationery lover: Badjacrafts creates wooden pens. Each uniquely crafted pen writes beautifully, and there are a variety of widths and pen nibs you can choose. Starting at $15, this would make the perfect gift for the stylish person in your life who has everything already. (Badjacrafts will be back at the Old Bus Depot Markets on 19December.)
For the busy mind: The Gundaroo Puzzler creates intricate 3D puzzles. Going a step further than a colouring book, and not much more expensive than the books on the market, these puzzles will calm a busy mind and give a sense of accomplishment with a finished product. The Gundaroo Puzzler will be at Handmade Market next week, and returning to Bus Depot Markets on 20 December.
For the tea enthusiast: We showcased Kate Ceramics last week, but her display teapots are definitely on our gift guide list. They may not be functional, but they are gorgeous feature pieces that would complement the true tea fanatics décor. Kate Ceramics is at the Bus Depot Markets every weekend until Christmas.
For the (wannabe) green thumb: The Bus Depot Markets often have plant sellers; however, when I visited, there were some amazing succulents and cacti ready to be taken home and gifted to the appropriate green thumb in the family – or wannabe green thumb.
For the person who has everything: food is always a great option, especially when you are gifting it to out-of-state friends and family. Canberra has some wonderful local food producers, and many of them are found at our local markets. A stalwart of Old Bus Depot Markets is The World’s Best Nuts! Locally produced, often right in front of your eyes at the markets, these bags of crunchy, sometimes sweet, nutty goodness make the perfect gift for even the most difficult person to buy for.
A stocking stuffer that is almost good enough to eat: Wyx and Wax creates candles that look good enough to eat. From cupcakes to robots, cereal bowls to Death Stars, there is a candle for everyone in your life.
The Christmas Bus Depot Markets are on again this weekend – 21 Wentworth Ave, Kingston – from 10am on both Saturday and Sunday.
