Traditionally, parents hire a tutor when their child is falling behind in a particular subject, or they need help preparing for a specific assignment or exam.
But what if there were greater reasons to hire a tutor; reasons that extended far beyond getting an A or passing the test?
Joanna Murphy, who runs Bright Spark Tutoring in Canberra says, “We believe that tutoring can work harder to help create confident learners.
Yes, we want our kids to know the answers, and do well at school. But we also want to change how they feel about (and approach) learning. We want to build a confidence that surpasses the next exam, and serves them throughout their school years and beyond.”
Bright Spark Tutoring, which offers home tutoring for kids from Year 1 to Year 12, has a “confidence first” mentality – whereby building a child’s confidence in their ability to learn and comprehend problem solving (rather than just solving the problem) is paramount.
“Every child is different, so you can’t just walk into a home, open a text book and start pushing for answers. You need to understand how the child approaches learning, where and why they’re having difficulty, and then design a program that will effectively remove those difficulties.
We want to create students that have the confidence to walk into their classrooms, put up their hand and ask why. No child should be afraid to ask for help; they should be excited to start a discussion and encourage their classmates to do the same. We all learn by sharing information. And the kids should be helping each other understand – not just relying on the teacher.”
It’s a new age to approach to an old school problem, and one that definitely complements many of the new initiatives being rolled out in public schools across the country.
Bright Spark Tutoring’s confidence-first mentality extends across their range of tutoring services, including:
- General revision
