For the first time in 20 years, the ACT Men’s and Mixed Netball teams, known as the ACT Griffins, will play on the national stage, flying this Saturday to the Gold Coast to fight it out for the Australian Men’s and Mixed Netball Championships trophy.
The competition attracts players nationwide, and this year will see an ACT men’s, mixed and under 17’s boy’s team join the line-up on court.
“We are really excited to take three strong teams to the championships and compete against the best men’s and mixed teams in Australia,” said Adam Commens, a Griffins players’ representative.
Netball is Australia’s most popular team sport for women, with roughly 15 percent of adult women participating.
While less popular with men (only 2 percent of men play netball), its popularity has grown the past decade from 3,000 participants in 2006 to almost double that today.
The ACT men’s competition, known as the M-League, began in 2016 and is overseen by the ACT Men’s Netball Association. Men’s teams compete on Saturday afternoons.
“Netball is not traditionally the sport you associate with male competition but we are proud that we have been able to re-establish men’s netball in the ACT and help to grow the game overall,” Mr Commens said.
“It’s been a big year of growth for men’s netball in the ACT and it’s great to see that so many men and boys have put their name forward to play at the elite level of the game.
“There is no doubt that this year will be a very exciting one for men’s netball in the Territory.”
