What’s in a name? Recent media chatter about American names for residential developments in Canberra led me to investigate the name of a new residential development in Woden called ‘Ivy’.
Ivy is a 16-storey, resort-style apartment complex in the Woden Town Centre.
It is the first apartment complex in Canberra to offer residents an onsite rejuvenation centre with spa, saunas and resort style pool. It will also have a children’s playground, library and bowling lawn.
It is being developed by a trio of award-winning local property companies: Amalgamated Property Group, DBI Architecture and Milin Builders.
But back to the name: ‘Ivy’.
‘Ivy’ is the name of an evergreen climbing vine of the ‘ginseng’ family. It comes from the Old English word ‘ifig’ meaning ‘climber’. It’s first known usage was about 900 years ago.
Now, it is interesting that the Chinese word ‘ginseng’ is made up of two characters meaning ‘person’ and ‘plant root’ (the roots of the plant are fork shaped like a pair of legs).
Ginseng’s botanical genus name ‘Panax’ in Greek also means ‘all healing’ ie. ‘panacea’. Ginseng is also used as a muscle relaxant in Chinese medicine.
So, there you have it, what better way to describe the new Ivy development in Woden than as a complex that ‘climbs’ upwards, where ‘people’ can take ‘root’ and ‘relax’, ‘heal’ and rejuvenate.

Ivy has a mix of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom residences. Every element has been precisely chosen to ensure quality, functionality and sustainability. These include double glazing, floor to ceiling windows, SMEG appliances, stone benchtops, induction cooktops and expansive views.
“With 22 apartment layouts and three colour palettes available, potential residents are spoilt for choice,” Mark said.
With a flow of natural light, each residence is connected to the outside, delivering a feeling of generosity and space. Floor-to-ceiling windows drink in the views and with an average EER of 7.3, comfort is guaranteed.

Ivy has been developed for live-in owners, people downsizing from larger houses or upsizing from smaller apartments.
Investors will be attracted by the growth of the Woden Town Centre and Ivy’s location as it is close to public service hubs, the bus interchange and the Woden light rail stop.
Ivy is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. Approximately 50% has already been sold.
