Dr Salam Ismael, from the Baghdad College of Medicine, Baghdad University is conducting a lecture on Monday, 22 May 2006, 5.30 – 6.30pm. It will be at the Law Link Theatre, cnr Fellows & East Roads, at The Australian National University.
Dr Ismael is presenting this talk to share his unique, first-hand experiences in Iraq before and after the war there. He was the head of junior doctors in Baghdad before the invasion of the city in March 2003. He treated casualties of the first siege of Fallujah in April 2004, and was one of the first independent observers to enter the city following the intense conflict there in November 2004. His work has included organising humanitarian and medical missions in various internally displaced camps and to health units across Iraq, including in Fallujah, Hadeetha, Qaim, Talafar, and Diala.
