Now that December has rolled around, it’s time to soak up those summer vibes.
Spearheaded by a group of local musicians, Roots & Reggae By The Lake is a decidedly community-flavoured blend of food, drink and music, all set to take place in an idyllic Canberra locale.
Billed as a mini-festival of sorts, the event is taking its community involvement and DIY ethos to heart, bringing together artists, businesses, arts organisations and punters from around the region for an afternoon of summer celebration and family-friendly entertainment.
The festival has been lovingly curated by locals, for locals and, as you might expect, features some of the city’s blossoming roots, folk and reggae artists.
Liam Wright is a young singer-songwriter with a penchant for breezy melodies and detailed storytelling. Fans of Neil Young and Paul Kelly will be excited by Wright’s 2018 release ‘The Lighthouse’, a taste of good things to come from this ridiculously hardworking artist.
Kopasetic are relative newcomers, having released their debut EP Rhapsoby Blues earlier this year. Its five tracks are full of deft songwriting and musicianship, underpinned by fingerstyle guitar and world music influences.
Rounding out the live music lineup is Black Cypress, a blues and roots trio that draw on three-part harmonies and folk fiction storytelling to create a distinct nostalgic atmosphere in their performances.
The pairing of DJs Madda Irie and Rafa Chango will also be on hand, spinning reggae, dub and roots tunes from around the world and making sure there’s never a dull moment throughout the evening.
The tranquil atmosphere of Lennox Gardens provides the perfect setting for the mini-festival. Located on the southern bank of Lake Burley Griffin, the gardens offer views of Black Mountain and The Brindabellas and the nearby Nara Peace Park and Beijing Gardens make for even more places to explore.
To cap it all off, attendees can expect to be enticed by distinctly local food and drink options. The Pizza Trailer and Bell Air Coffee will be on hand with artisanal offerings to keep the masses fed and watered while Wine Bar Co. will be on deck with their Pop Inn bar.
Roots & Reggae By The Lake takes place this Sunday from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Lennox Gardens. Entry is free, and you can register your attendance via Eventbrite. More info available here.
