Postcards from Gungahlin is a new project from Gungahlin Arts which invites residents of the Gungahlin region to get creative and help develop a digital portrait of the place they call home. With people spending more time closer to home due to social isolation it’s an interesting time to reflect on our local area and the way it shapes and influences us.
Gungahlin residents can create a postcard-sized artwork inspired by their home suburb in any artistic medium for the chance to win $300 and have their work printed as a limited-edition postcard.
“We’re so excited to see how people view their home suburbs, and we’re expecting that there will be a little bit of healthy competition between suburbs as well, particularly with the chance to win prizes,” says Gungahlin Programs Officer Michele Grimston.
“I feel like this is an opportunity to uncover some extraordinary gems – both in terms of talented artists in our community and some really special places.
“There’s so much beauty in Gungahlin, but I think a lot of it is very underappreciated. I can’t wait to see some of this come out of the woodwork so we can share it with the wider Canberra community. But of course, when you’re talking postcards, it’s not just the ‘beautiful’ that’s important. We’re looking forward to some entries that highlight the very kooky as well,” Ms Grimston says
Artists of all ages, backgrounds and abilities – children and adults, professionals and hobbyists – are encouraged to submit works to create an exhibition which creates a portrait of a place as diverse as the people who inhabit it.
Connor McLauchlan of Franklin has entered this photograph, but artwork can be submitted in any medium, not just photography.
Entries are open to residents who live in the suburbs of Amaroo, Bonner, Casey, Crace, Franklin, Forde, Gungahlin, Harrison, Jacka, Mitchell, Moncrieff, Ngunnawal, Nicholls, Palmerston, Taylor and Throsby. All entries received will be part of an online exhibition Postcards from Gungahlin.
