When the team at Maloney’s Property celebrates its 25th anniversary in October 2021, Canberra’s charities will receive the gifts.
Plans are underway for the annual Maloney’s Long Lunch, which last year raised $130,000 for the Chappell Foundation’s campaign against youth homelessness.
Canberra youth charity Raw Potential was also a recipient of $75,000.
Principal Peter Maloney hopes this year’s event will be just as successful when the community comes together for a double celebration.
“It will be a fantastic way to celebrate our 25th birthday, while also supporting the Chappell Foundation and the great work they do,” he says.

Peter and Sue Maloney began their business in Canberra on 1 November, 1996, having worked in the property industry for almost 10 years.
They started out as Realty World Kingston before changing the business name to Maloney’s Property.
“We were the little ones to start with, but now we’re one of the biggest real estate businesses in Canberra,” says Peter.
During the years they’ve grown their sales and property management teams after buying out rental rolls from other agencies including KG Putt, Capital Real Estate, Manuka Prestige, National Real Estate, Property Gallery and Philip Kouvelis Real Estate.
“We now have 20 staff with a total of 440 years’ experience,” says Peter.
It’s those staff members the Maloney’s value the most.
Marion Nielson, in particular, is one of Maloney’s greatest assets the company gained when it absorbed Philip Kouvelis Real Estate.
For Peter and Sue, their staff is like one big happy family. In fact, many of their employees are family members, with their son, Darcy, joining the property management team two years ago, and Peter’s sister, Moira, boasting 16 years’ experience in property sales.
Debbie-Lee Jackson-Hope may as well be one of the family, having been with the Maloneys since the very beginning.
Peter says retaining their skilled, passionate staff has been pivotal to the success of their business.
“There wouldn’t be many teams with the experience we have across the board,” he says.
“The real capital of your business is your staff, their intellectual property and their experience – you can’t teach that.”
In the past 30 years, Peter says the real estate industry has changed significantly, both behind the scenes and the way people purchase property.
“Technology has been a real game-changer,” he says.
“Probably the biggest thing I remember was getting our first fax through the fax machine – it was an amazing thing.
“So much has changed for buyers, as well. In the 1980s, we used to drive people around and show them through 20 or 30 homes in one day. It was exhausting.
“Now people can do their research online and narrow it down to four or five properties.
“The photos are so good and buyers are so much better informed that we sell properties directly off the internet without the buyers even seeing them.”
When the Maloneys first started out in 1996, Peter says the Canberra market took its biggest ever hit, with median prices dropping by eight per cent before bouncing back in 1998-1999.
As well as providing a premium sales service, Maloney’s have built up a strong property management team, forging relationships with 1500 landlords across Canberra from their Kingston office.
Peter says in order to provide a premium real estate service, his team must keep adapting to the needs of their clients and continue to deliver effective results.
“Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm, but it’s the ability to be forward-thinking and dependable that ensures your longevity,” he says.
Peter and Sue also operate Accommodate Canberra, a hybrid between property management and hotel management, providing their clients with an opportunity to benefit from bigger returns in areas such as Barton, Kingston and Braddon.
When they’re not running their suite of businesses, Peter, Sue and Darcy enjoy a round of golf at Royal Canberra Golf Club.
Darcy also excels at competition clay target shooting. He has his sights set on the national championships in October.
