Matthew James Carlyle Minson, a 52-year-old man from Greenway, has been charged with possessing child abuse material following a police operation yesterday (1 July).
Last month, members of the ACT Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team received information relating to a person allegedly accessing child abuse material via peer-to-peer file-sharing internet sites.
A search warrant was executed at a Greenway residence yesterday by JACET officers with the assistance of a specialist canine team.
Mr Minson was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of possessing or controlling child abuse material obtained or accessed using a carriage service. He appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court today and was refused bail by Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker.
She said documents submitted to the court showed he had allegedly admitted to police he had a sense of obsession and addiction to accessing child abuse material.
A number of computer and data storage items were seized and will be forensically examined. Further charges are expected.
The case was adjourned to 23 July.
