The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the ACT region and is predicting damaging winds and large hailstones over the next several hours.
The Emergency Services Agency says these thunderstorms are moving south-east and are forecast to impact northern parts of ACT, and Yass and Goulburn.
The ACT State Emergency Service advises people to move cars under cover or away from trees, and secure or put away loose items around the house, yard and balcony.
It says people should keep clear of creeks and storm drains, stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
Keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
The ESA says that the ACT has received more than 70 mm of rain since 9 am Wednesday and ACTSES volunteers had received more than 35 requests for assistance. Coppins Crossing has been closed until further notice due to the continuing inclement weather.
