Damned if you do...

In the ongoing saga of the Defence roo cull the ABC are now reporting that the RSPCA has waded the debate stating that the Department of Defence could be up for animal cruelty charges if the cull DID NOT go ahead.

Having a look on the RSPCA site in relation to this issue bought me to this page which indeed states that the RSPCA is critical of the Defence Department’s decision but did not specify in what way. In calling the number listed I was put though to a Department of Defence media line who dutifully referred me back to the RSPCA if I wanted their position, which I did. In calling the RSPCA 1300 number I got though to a helpful lady who unfortunately didn’t even know the cull had been postponed and referred me back to their “hotline” number for more details, which was in fact the Department of Defence media number I’d spoken to earlier. In the background I could hear someone informing the her that the problem was that although the RSPCA was in favour of methods other than culling that the DoD had left things too long and now that if they didn’t cull asap the animals would starve.

The ACT Government Department of Territory and Municipal Services has a very interesting and informative fact sheet regarding the issue here.

Previous Riot posts on the issue can be found here and here.
