Charcoal Chicken

For years we frequently patronised the Charcoal Chicken place in Manuka but it closed down about six years ago when its lease expired. Then we used Kingsleys Chicken in Queanbeyan but (dammit) this closed down too – last time I passed the premises were still vacant.

Does anyone know if the Manuka operation resurfaced anywhere? I think Kingsleys franchises survive though I have never located one.

Is there a charcoal chicken place surviving in Canberra/Queanbeyan?

yeah jackos was great!

Robertos dial a pizza was the best…same era as Jackos, just better.

i think thats the one.

there was a great pizza delivery service in the early 90’s….

DOMINATED canberra….

now its name escapes me.

bought out by a multinational.

not dial-a-dinos (remember the apple crumble pizza?) but something else…

Oh yeah, I remember Golden Continental Chicken too! I think it was closer to the mid ninties that it closed though.

I miss the greatest BBQ Chook of them all – the Golden Continental Chicken at Mawson. It was owned by the Katheklakis family, and did the best roast chicken, chips, roast spuds and everything else. It closed in about 1992…

Kingsley’s do own both the QBN and also Lanyon premises. And suffer an inordinate number of break-ins and premises damage as a result of leaving them empty. FIIK why they aren’t open though, you’d need to ask Kingsley Varr himself.
Kingsley is quite real, and runs offices out of Dundas Court in Phillip, and they can be contacted by phone.
Go check your own Whitepages.

I remember getting chicken from Regal Charcoal Chicken as a kid… always was good. Although that would mean driving into Charnwood, being attacked by psuedo gangs and being blinded by the shine off their fake gold ‘bling’.

I could’ve written the original post! We mourned the demise of the Manuka charcoal chicken. We could even ring them and place our order (and this was back in the 80s). A chook and 2 bags of chips. The taste of that chook was sublime.
and then we used Kingsley’s in Queanbeyan! They had really cheap Sara Lee 1 litre ice cream, too (like the ultra chocolate). It’s still all curtained, crazy. It’s in such a prime spot, on Crawford st with TONS of easy parking all around it.
We’ve tried the place in Braddon (behind the new ANU residences?) and it’s OK.
Also, the little supermarket in Campbell shops has decent BBQ chooks but sometimes they run out.

But key is that they are BBQ, and you can drive up. I guess there’s always coles and woolies but it’s not the same. Woolies chooks are better than Coles chooks though!

Oporto anyone. Healthy (well, healthier) and tasty too.

I like chicken cut into smallish pieces so I eat it a la suppository.

There’s a restaurant in Manuka called Vasco’s Portuguese Grill. Last time we were there (mind you, was a while ago!) they had the yummiest charcoal type chicken…

“Go on have a bath, you’re very messy.” lol! I think he might be drunk or stoned… Pool room for the above quote please.

OT, did takeaways stop calling themselves “charcoal” chicken when they found out that eating charcoal gives you cancer?

Speaking of takeaways, I met this dumb queanbo today who said he worked part-time in a takeaway there. I asked him what kind of food they had, and he said “Good.” It was bizarre, he wasn’t even joking…

AD’s posts above are rad.

Is Kingsley’s chicken roasted over charcoal?

I’ll vouch for the potato cakes (or scallops if you will) at the Lowanna St chicken shop (and burgers) but I haven’t tried the chicken.

Yeah I hide my beard on my arse so I don’t get kebab stuck on my face.. because that would make it sooo obvious… he HAS a beard, there IS a kebab stuck in it – He MUST be terror!!!

Anybody eating a Kebab can be arrested for indirect contact with Terrorism.

i hear they are phasing out kebabs entirely from alibabas.

the chicken franchise that has split its stores with alibabars is ok… a bit messy you may need a bath after it. Go on have a bath, you’re very messy.

There’s a place in Hawker shops. Chickens are okay. The best chips!

Regal in Charnwood is very good.

There’s one in Braddon on Lowanna St (mixed feedback but I always found it alright)

There’s also an Indian/Sri Lankan/Turkish? (sorry, can’t remember exactly) in Belconnen near Monkey Magic, next to the video store (used to be Civic Video) and Kingsleys. Don’t know if its still open – but they had great chips! The chicken, while Charcoal was pressed flat.

Chicken Gourmet in the city is good, espcially after a few pints.

Something really wrong with Kingsley’s Chicken.

Their Lanyon Store closed down three years ago. It was closed in a rush too as their is equipment all over the place like deep fryer racks. Management said it would open in six months when new staff were trained. That was 2 1/2 years ago. As far as I know, they still own or lease the building and would be paying rates/rent for it.

we need henny penny

kippax, erindale, belcompton, canberra centre..

There is Regal Charcoal Chicken in Charnwood, and there are Kingsleys everywhere (Civic, Woden, Kippax etc).
