Gungahlin - Smoke Signals now required

A question to Jonathon Reynolds, is that as an aspiring Liberal Party candidate for the seat of Molonglo, what will you do to fix the phones and get the trains running on time?

There should be path redundancy in the phone network if there is not then Telstra should be shot. Don’t give me this rot about costs, because that is nonesense, redundancy is a basic service. No city should suffer an outage like this because one bearer was broken.

I’m sure if I could actually get broadband in Ngunnawal, this would have pissed me off. Its never ceases to amaze me that I had broadband in a 100+ year old house in the country town of Orange but I can’t get broadband in a place thats about 10 years old in the capital of Australia.

I’m sure this will really help Gungahlin get some government departments to move out there.

Who else remembers when Marty was on FM104.7? Quite a few years back and he’d do his prank calls.

One of his best was posing as a roadside worker from some construction company who had chopped through telstra’s cable… he even had earthmoving sounds running in the background…

Piss funny listening to the person from telstra being pranked trying to get the info out of Marty exactly who he was and where he was located, Marty was of course pretending he didn’t want to give the info away and wondering what penalties it was for performing such an action.

Because it’s expensive and people don’t want to pay for it. Your ISP has the option of laying its own redundancy but doesn’t, its not always Telstra’s fault.

Just noticed that you posted this story at 9:11 … hope that wasn’t a portent of a potential terrorist attack on the phone lines!

It does beg the question to be asked…. why is there no redundancy on the fibre-optic backbone bearers? Isn’t redundancy standard practice these days?

If it is this easy to take out Gungahlin and sizable chunks of Belconnen then some serious questions need to be asked.

Our house was affected by the outage yesterday.
Not knowing why our internet was down, I called bigpond support about 6.30pm.

I spent about 30 mins talking to the support person, who couldn’t understand why our internet was down. ABC news reported the outage at 7, which I was watching in the background.

I found it unbelievable that ABC news could know about the outage, yet the person manning the bigpond support desk didn’t have a clue.

It was horrible, I could not spend time on Facebook, i had to (gasp) spend it with my family instead
