Entrance fee being reintroduced at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve

Although this news was out Monday, I’ve only just found out about it and thought others might have missed it. According to the ABC visitors will again be paying an entrance fee to the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. No date is given as to when this will start.

The prices themselves don’t seem too onerous at $10 per vehicle, and $20 for a year’s worth of entrance. It seems to me that paying $20 on your first visit to the Reserve “just in case’ would be worthwhile.

Apparently the revenue is going to be funding both an “interpretation program” and unspecified “other activities” that are to be run by Conservation Volunteers Australia.

Went out there today for the “Extravaganza”. Free!
Great place and great volunteers.
Anyone know when/ if the fees come in?

are our rates ALREADY paying for maintaining public assets… or do I have the wrong idea about rates?

So much for spending the budget surplus on something useful. 🙁

There are two parts to this story – one is the fees, the other is that operations will be taken over by a volunteer organisation. Conservation Volunteers do great work, but the government should NOT be relying only on volunteers to manage its nature reserves! The management of the park deserves government funding, and people working there deserve more than a warm fuzzy feeling in return for their hard work.
