How do you know when snow is in the ranges close by? Raised in the tropics, my nose for snow is less than ideal. I just can’t tell if there is snow about or if it is just the usual Canberra freeze. Any tips or suggestions from those who are more attuned to their environment?

Ironically, around this time last year Corin was closed due to too much snow!

The back way to Selwyn is quite nice, you go through Namadgi, and miss the big loop through Cooma.

You could head up to the Ginini carpark in the brindabellas, and then walk up to Gingera. I would not be surprised to find some snow especially on the south-facing spots.

There’s a decent amount of snow at Selwyn at the moment – they have reasonable (for a ski field, anyway) prices, and you can toboggan there – you can’t do that at the bigger ski resorts.

Just a few brief light showers in the Victorian resorts today. Over the last few days the resorts have had between 15 and 40 centimetres worth. Mt Buller has had about 40cm in total. A slight chance of light snow flurries for the southern-most resorts early on Friday morning.

Cold air temperatures and low humidities will follow from Thursday until Sunday morning, providing excellent snow-making weather.

Rain is next likely from Sunday, mainly at night as a slow-moving low crosses from the west and draws moisture from the north. The rain should steadily increase due to increasing moisture and the slowly approaching low but it looks like there will be some warming before the rain increases. This will cause some of the existing snow-cover to melt. Snow may not fall lower than 1600 metres until Wednesday due to the low and associated cold air moving only slowly. By the time that the coldest air arrives, most of the moisture will be heading across the Tasman.
