Paying Rego

Yep, the cops do a quick radio check to make sure its registered and if it is and you are still waiting for the sticker to arrive then there is no problem. Same if you have got the receipt number. If you have been lazy and have the sticker in the glove box, expect to be made to get it out and stick it on the spot whilst the cops watch.

Lying and then rushing home and paying it the same night does not work though, records indicate the exact date and TIME you paid for your rego……

If your rego bill has a barcode with the Australia Post symbol, you can pay it at the post office. I don’t think you can pay for gas cars there as they need to be inspected, or concession because they need to sight your concession at the RTA. Either way, you simply won’t have a barcode on your bill.

You can pay on the expiry date if you want to, you will be considered registered if your payment has been approved.

Cost out weighed the benefit of keeping the civic branch open so they closed it, and hose concerned with Credit Card payments can always use Bpay but keep in mind it takes a couple of days for payments to clear.

They should adopt the NSW system whereby you pay online, but don’t need to wait for a new sticker to arrive.

Also, Mrs Berlina was once breath tested and I had forgot to put the sticker on the car (although it was paid up), and the cops did a quick check, reminded her to put the sticker on (in a friendly manner), and let her go. Of course, she blamed me, which probably helped.

er… unauthorised, that is. Point is, in the credit card system its the merchants that carry the risk.

Skid: I’m pretty comfortable using a credit card – just a call to the bank and they’ll issue a charge-back on any authorised transactions.

The same goes for carrying your licence while driving – they *can* let you go once they verify you own a valid licence. Police ‘discretion’ is deliberately gray. And easily fallen foul of.

C` you are correct you are given enough lee-way to get the sticker. It happened to me, got pulled over explained the situation, I even printed off the on-line recept and showed them that, they radioed it in and waited for confirmation that I was registered and let me go with a smile.

I’ve also heard the same thing. An associate of mine was pulled over and explained to the cops that she’d paid for her rego but hadn’t got the new sticker yet. She reckons they were happy to let it slide…once they checked with the rego office. Which was unfortunate for her, since she was actually lying. Let that be a lesson…of some sort.

I’m sure I’ve heard spokespeople on the radio saying that if you’ve paid but not yet received then there’ll be no penalty.

That might be down to discretion and obviously the grace period is only a couple of weeks.

As longs as you’ve paid the rego, it shouldn’t matter that your rego sticker hasn’t arrived in time. This is what I’ve understood from literature sent to me. I am not a Lawyer.

They are trying to get everyone to use the Canberra Connect website.

I mean to say “to guarantee that my new rego stick will arrive IN TIME”, not this year!

I also work in Civic and was most inconvenienced when the Civic shopfront closed. That being said, I renewed my rego this morning at Dickson and was still at work before 9am – it opens at 8.15 and usually doesn’t take too long if you get there then.

On the internet payment front, I agree paying by internet is ocnvenient. However due to cash flow issues I found myself unable to pay with enough time to guarantee that my new rego sticker will arrive this year – hence the trip in person, that was quite pleasant.

No, presumably they deemed that they were unable to provide a satisfactory service, so they closed it.

Providing a satisfactory service may have involved hiring four times as many staff, and opening a massive office with tens of service counters, all to deal with a 1-2 hour peak load.

Alternatively, attempt to inform the customer that there are plenty of convenient ways to pay for your rego other than wasting your lunchtime in a queue.

Included in the latest registration renewal I received was a little pamphlet carrying the message “Did you know that you don’t have to pay for your registration renewal at a Canberra Connect Shopfront?”

This pamphlet explains that you can pay your renewal via the Internet, a post office, via BPay or over the phone.

Reading is useful.

I have no problems with using the internet to pay it. But I also find it convinient to go at lunch hour also.

Personally I just pay online and get my sticker in the post.
Ditto. I haven’t paid a bill “offline” in years. Can’t imagine why anyone with decent internet access would do otherwise (though I’d be fascinated to hear good reasons).

I don’t think you’re wrong. They closed the Civic Canberra Connect store on London Circuit a while ago. Stupid if you ask me…
