A group of boys are alleged to have attacked a man as he walked down the street in Civic, including stabbing and repeatedly punching him.
ACT Policing allege four boys were standing on the footpath at the intersection of Cooyong Street and Batman Street at around 3 am on Sunday morning (19 January) when the man and his friend walked nearby.
One of the boys allegedly rode an e-scooter into the man, before they all grabbed him and began punching him in the head.
It is alleged that when the man tried to defend himself, one of the boys stabbed him in the leg.
The group then fled the scene on foot.
A police spokesperson said emergency services arrived a short time later and the man was taken to hospital with serious leg and facial injuries.
On Sunday afternoon, officers raided a home, where they found two of the boys alleged to be involved.
The pair, who cannot be named due to their ages, were arrested and faced the ACT Children’s Court on Monday (20 January).
One of them, a 16-year-old, had already faced the court on Saturday (18 January) charged with minor theft.
He was granted bail over those allegations before he was arrested for the alleged bashing.
The 16-year-old was handed a charge of recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm on Monday and his lawyer, Bol Mathiang, said he would not be applying for bail that day.
The court heard while he may make a bail application in the future, it was expected to be opposed by the prosecution.
Special Magistrate Lucinda Wilson adjourned the matter to February.
“I love you, buddy,” his father said to him.
Before the 16-year-old was taken away by custodial officers, he asked, “Could I please call my missus and tell her ‘I love you?'”
The special magistrate said he couldn’t, but suggested that the members of his family who were present in the courtroom could pass on the message.
A 15-year-old boy was also charged with joint commission recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm when he faced court that morning.
He also did not make a bail application and was remanded in custody to face court again at a future date.
The 16-year-old did not enter a plea and it was unclear whether the younger boy had.
A police spokesperson said inquiries were continuing to identify the other two boys alleged to be involved in the assault.
