A man has been accused of assaulting a three-month-old baby girl, seriously injuring her, when she was under his care.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday (28 July) where he was formally handed charges of recklessly inflicting grievous or actual bodily harm over the alleged incident from 22 July 2023.
Prosecutor Mark Wadsworth said the circumstances of the alleged assault were unclear.
Defence lawyer Himangi Ticku of Andrew Byrnes Law Group said it was claimed that the alleged incident occurred at her client’s home when the baby was under his care.
The court also heard the baby’s mother is the man’s ex-partner and they do not live together.
The man applied for bail, which was not opposed by the prosecution.
Magistrate Jane Campbell granted bail on the conditions that he lives in southern Canberra, does not contact the child or her mother, and is not within 100 metres of them.
The matter was adjourned to August. No pleas were entered.
