Police are searching for a man who is alleged to have broken into a store in Bungendore before stealing a police car and fleeing across the ACT border.
A NSW Police spokesperson said that at about 2:20 am on Friday morning (7 March), officers were called to Malbon Street in Bungendore after reports of a break-in.
When officers attached to Monaro Police District arrived, they allegedly saw a man inside the building and unsuccessfully tried to arrest him.
During the struggle, the alleged robber was Tasered in an attempt to stop him, but that was ineffective.
The man then managed to get inside a nearby marked police vehicle, police allege.
Once in the vehicle, he allegedly did a U-turn and drove towards the two officers. One of the officers shot at the car, hitting the passenger-side door.
The man then allegedly drove off in the police vehicle, towards the ACT, and an allegedly stolen car was found nearby, according to NSW police.
Officers from the Monaro Police District established a crime scene and started an investigation.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated two officers at the scene in Bungendore, with one needing to be taken to Queanbeyan Hospital with lower leg injuries for further treatment.
No other injuries have been reported.
An ACT Policing spokesperson said the allegedly stolen police car was later found in the Territory.
At about 3 am, a couple were inside a white Kia SUV on Canberra Avenue, when the car allegedly stopped them.
“Shortly after this occurred, police believe the Kia was stolen by a man who was associated with the stolen NSW Police vehicle,” the ACT police spokesperson said.
“In order to escape, the female victim of the SUV theft entered the police vehicle and drove it a short distance on Canberra Avenue before colliding with a stationary object.”
The woman was arrested after multiple ACT Policing units attended the scene.
“After confirming the prior incidents, she was unarrested and released without charge.”
The alleged victim was found nearby, and was unharmed.
NSW Police is investigating the alleged offending with ACT Police, and their inquiries are continuing.
“At this time, while the stolen SUV has been recovered, the persons responsible for these incidents are yet to be located,” said the ACT Policing spokesperson.
