After a long year the biggest posting in Canberra diplomatic circles has finally been filled according to The Age. Our fair city is to be graced by Robert D McCallum jr as the US Ambassador to Australia.

The Ambassador Designate (he still needs to be confirmed by the congress and to present his credentials to the Governor-General) has a dull biography on the US Department of Justice website, and a bit more info on the wikipedia.

UPDATED: Rod Quinn in today’s dead-tree CT has the information that McCallum was at Yale with President Bush and they were in the infamous Skull and Bones society. The Wikipedia entry on the society lists him as one of 11 S&B boys appointed in the first BushJnr administration.

Skull and Bones is the most well known of the secret societies based at Yale University

Not a great claim to fame for a secret society is it?

So the reason we’ve gone without a US ambassador for so long is that none of GW Bush’s mates were looking for work…?
