Joy Burch is letting people know that the redevelopment of the dreaded ABC Flats is getting a meeting to express your feelings at:

“The proposal for the redevelopment will see a major injection of residential units and commercial activity in this precinct, as well as the retention of some public housing stock,” Ms Burch said.

“The Government is committed to ensuring resident living in the precinct understand what is being proposed and have their say on the plans, and we will continue to consult with the community.”

Some of the land designated for potential development is occupied by public housing, Allawah Court and Currong Apartments in Section 52 Braddon and Bega Court, Section 7 Reid. The remainder of the land, Section 57 Braddon, is occupied by organisations forming part of the Catholic Church.

Tomorrow’s consultation is being conducted by the Communities Services Directorate, and begins at 6pm at the Griffin Centre, Genge Street, Canberra City. More information on the potential redevelopment proposal can be found at http://www.dhcs.act.gov.au/.

The consultation is in addition to that being carried out by the Environment and Sustainable Development, which has issued a draft Territory Plan Variation that would allow for the redevelopment of the sites to allow for the more dense housing and commercial uses.

Consultation on the variation closes on Monday, 20 February and more information can be found at www.actpla.act.gov.au/draftvariations.

We can but hope they move swiftly.
