ABC Radio National had an interesting program on the possible demise of the Narrabundah Longstay Caravan Park located next to Fyshwick on its “Street Stories” program. It consisted mainly of interviews of the residents and was definitely biased in their favour. Some interesting facts came out that I didn’t know of such as that the ACT gov gave the land to Koomarri, assumedly on the understanding they would keep the Park going, but Koomarri then sold it within a year or two to a developer for a small fortune. Within days of contract settlement the developer then sent eviction letters to all the residents given them their marching orders. So much for Koomarri’s community charity bleeding heart! You can listen to the program again tonight (Sunday) at 8pm or online here: http://www.abc.net.au/rn/streetstories/stories/2008/2228066.htm

CT suggested he was planning to build a new govt dept building out there.

I suspect the developer has permission to build a transportable housing complex on his new site. Nothing more.

He may have a hard time getting any change of use plan through the ACT planning process.

Is the saying ‘revenge is best served cold’?

…airport sold to be an airport, and suddenly it’s a CBD in the middle of nowhere. (and still a somewhat shabby little airport). Well OK, that wasn’t the ACT government, but still.

The CT today had a story saying that the FED govt has allowed the land swap, so the developer gets a nice new block, and the caravan park residents get to stay.

But this has cost the ACT govt 1 million as a fee to the developer, not to mention all the admin costs for the past year or so of wrangling.

The ACT govt really needs to place some conditions on land it hands out for special purposes. This sort of thing keeps on happening. EG – Kamberra Wines – cheap land given to the winery, and an intersection built for them. Later sold for massive profit.

Canberry Fair – zoned as ‘commercial enterprise’ bought up cheap by Bob Winnel as failed commercial enterprise. Now to be rezoned as housing so he makes a packet.

ACT govt is being walked all over by these developers. They need to wise up.
