Chief Minister Gallagher has announced what we’re doing to celebrate the former Mully Cup winner Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee.
“The Diamond Jubilee is an historic occasion, and earlier this year the Prime Minister announced a number of initiatives to mark the event including; the lighting of a beacon on top of Parliament House on 4 June; the renaming of Parkes Place to Queen Elizabeth Terrace, development of a Queens’s Birthday stamp, issuing of a coin by the Australian Mint; staging a national Jubilee essay competition and creation of a women’s leadership scholarship,” the Chief Minister said.
The Prime Minister also wrote to me asking that the ACT Government consider matching the Commonwealth’s $5 million contribution to the Trust, on a per capita basis.
“As such, I am pleased to be able to announce that on behalf of the Canberra community, the ACT Government will make a significant contribution with $100,000 to be given to the Trust,” the Chief Minister said.
“Funds raised through the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust will be used to invest in projects that will make a real and lasting impact on the lives of people throughout the Commonwealth, so we are really pleased to be able to contribute in lieu of a gift,” the Chief Minister said.
There’s also going to be a Diamond Jubilee event in Floriade which should thrill the wrinklies.
Considering we already have Queen Elizabeth Terrace in Parliament House there’s going to be some potential for confusion.
I wonder what Jon Stanhope thinks?
