The independent Australian Council on Healthcare Standards have given the thumbs up to the ACT’s health system today, says Katy Gallagher.

The team of surveyors evaluated all aspects of the ACT Health system and assessed them against 47 criteria. ACT Health met all criteria to achieve accreditation with 28 marked as achievements, 18 extensive achievements and 1 outstanding achievement.

“This result is a commendable one for ACT Health and I welcome the detailed report that the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards has undertaken of the ACT’s first class health and hospital system,” the Chief Minister said.

The key findings of the ACHS survey team included excellence in delivery of infection control; health promotion and staff and patient safety; and awarded the organisation’s approach to pressure injuries with an Outstanding Achievement award for the work done to reduce hospital acquired pressure injuries.

I notice that Hospital staff have recently started asking patients their names, dates of birth and what they are there for at Every Opportunity – this was a noticeable difference this time, compared to the last time my daughter was in hozzie. Didn’t see much hand washing though – they seem very reliant on anti bacterials.
