The masters and their apprentices gathered in Belconnen for Canberra’s annual plumbers’ trade show. Hosted by Master Plumbers ACT, the Plumbing Trade Show provided members and the broader plumbing community with access to the latest information on all aspects of the plumbing business.

Master Plumbers is the peak body representing the interests of professionally trained and accredited plumbing businesses.

Executive officer Leigh Watson says the show aims to ensure the Canberra community, industry and government have access to up-to-date, professional, qualified and ethical plumbers.

“There are currently around 2,000 plumbing businesses in the ACT working across all sectors from individual home maintenance to large-scale apartment fit-outs. Sometimes we take the good work that plumbers do for granted. Just think of all the work they do across a range of areas, including residential maintenance, critical ACT urban infrastructure such as schools and hospitals, as well as new building construction,” Watson said.

Master Plumbers expects the number of plumbers in the ACT to increase over the coming years. “As both residential and commercial construction continues to be on the up in Canberra, the demand for plumbers has increased,” Watson explained.

“We believe our member plumbers, from sole traders to large companies employing hundreds, are contributing greatly to this critical health infrastructure in the ACT. Plumbing is something that is often taken for granted but we would all know very quickly if it isn’t being done well,” Watson said.

“Plumbers punch above their weight in terms of being business operators too. With thousands of plumbing businesses in the ACT, the sector is a significant employer, hiring apprentices and qualified tradespeople across the spectrum of plumbing, gas-fitting and drainage work as well as admin staff,” Watson said.

The trade show included talks by Michael Schaper, CEO of the Canberra Business Chamber and Ben Green, ACT Construction Occupations Registrar, and there was plenty to see with over 20 exhibitors displaying their information from across a wide range of sectors including plumbing suppliers, safety, business support and more.
