As for the ANU-CIT thing, well good on them for making it more accessable. People who get entry to ANU through the CIT link are more likely to complete (and do well) at Uni than the average school leaver. They have to work hard at CIT to get into ANU, and these people are less likely to throw the opportunity away once they have earned it.

Although the UC-CIT thing fell through, UC still went ahead and started some ‘alternative pathway’ Diplomas through University of Canberra College. I completed mine last year and start my degree tomorrow morning (with 12 credit points too). The same diploma would also have given me entrance to my degree at ANU, and while some snobs may turn their noses up, I preferred the ‘applied’ approach of UC rather than the ‘theoretical’ approach of ANU. And I will be 40 when I finally graduate 🙂

It isn’t harder to get into, it just has a different educational focus.

Most Australian unis are watering down their degrees now. Education is big business.

Well first things first, how hard or easy it is to get let’s admit isn’t to do with the institution, so much as the intake area. Bigger city, harder to get into.

But that aside, UC unapologetically markets itself as both easier to get in to, and easier to complete a degree at (normally using the euphemistic comparison that they’re more practical skills focused while ANU and other big names are “theory focussed.”

And that’s fine you know. Different styles for different needs and outcomes, nothing at all wrong with that.

Necessarily though, if ANU does deal with higher end study, more research and theory oriented, then the bar should be higher for entry.

If this merger helps more students reach that bar, that’s great. It shouldn’t though be a way to lower that bar. Unfortunately given all the crud ANU is doing watering down degrees, not holding my breath.
