Ask RiotACT: Old Stairs near Parkes Way Black Mountain

Voltaire1694 24 June 2019 14

Hi Rioters,

For many years while driving along Parkes Way, I’ve seen these stairs. So I took a walk to check them out…

It is an old concrete stairway near where Parkes Way enters the Glenoch Interchange, at the base of Black Mountain. It looks old and doesn’t look like it is part of the Parkes Way or the nearby water channel, so perhaps it pre-dates the dual lane road?

The exact location is here: https://goo.gl/maps/bDH2pujS5dYT6p816

Does anyone know anything about the stairway?

It's what Led Zeppelin were singing about but decided Black Mountain didn't sound as good as Heaven.

I can remember driving to and from work along Parkes Way and on the steep side of Black Mountain could see what looked like wire netting fixed to the hillside. At the time people said it was there to stop rocks from falling onto the road.

They are not stairs, they were designed as a storm water measure to divert and slow down runoff coming down to Parks Way from the steep embankment along there.

I don’t think it is meant to be stairs. I think it is part of the ground water run off system- designed to slow and disperse lots of run off. I think I have seen them elsewhere - part of that iconic Federal infrastructure that Canberra has in places.

SShhh, don't let geogovcon see it, it'll get re-developed, with an excuse of "stairs were originally placed there for this to happen" 🤣😂🤣

Bob Susic, yep, and they’ll say that Burley Griffin drew them to be there, just like the city council said that he spoke of light rail. 😂

David Newman WBG definitely included a railway in the original plan, but the July 1922 flood ended that plan.
