Ask RiotACT

Hi Rioters,

It’s been a while since there was a pilates post on the site (2009) and I’m sure the pilates scene in Canberra has changed a bit since then. I’m keen to give it a try – ideally at a dedicated studio with well qualified instructors.

Is there anywhere that you recommend trying for a beginner (southside preferred) or anywhere that you have been and were not happy with?

Jim at Sport and Spinal Physio is really good, has a range of beginner/intermediate/expert classes and operates out of their Gungahlin and city practice.

I’m a bit late to this one, but I’d certainly recommend “back in strength” in Deakin if you have any issues that need physio oversight. I have lower back issues and they’ve got me much better results than any previous pilates I’ve done.

I used to go to Pilates Canberra in Phillip & was happy with the set-up and teachers as a near-beginner.

Now I do yoga instead and recommend giving that a try too (also in Phillip is Canberra Yoga with a range of classes, some of which will give you the benefits of pilates + more). Just a thought.

Higher Function is very central off Petrie Plaza in the City and is run by a trained physiotherapist.

She is a lovely person and the group is very social, often getting together for other things.

I second that. I was referred to Janet at Higher Function as a physio but with advice to book in for Pilates too. It’s made a huge difference after three months so I’ve decided to go twice a week. Because it’s physio-run, you get guidance relevant to your own injuries/strengths/weaknesses AND some money back if you have private health cover.
