We took some visitors from Sydney to dinner last night firstly to Jammo Wests where we we’re denied entry as we had rubber thongs on.
Needless to say the previous day we’d been to many places in Sydney in the same thongs but no, not allowed in the pokie palace at
Jammo. Next was an old favourite at Kaleen. More disappointment and marked never to return. Service and waiting times were horrendous.
Is there any decent places to eat in Belco that isn’t Chinese? Suggestions please

Does Penriff Leagues club let you in with thongs?
I can thoroughly recommend Turkish Delight located in Weedon Close, Belconnen. It is up and running again after being severly damaged by fire earlier this year. Food, service and ambience are well worth a visit. If it helps the website is http://www.turkishdelight.com.au. You might even get in with thongs… 🙂

x 10.
I should add that a hot chick in a thong is a welcome sight anywhere. But I’m going to take a wild guess that ex-Warrior doesn’t fall into that category.
Of course it’s bogans that think you have to dress up, that’s why clubs have dress codes! As for Astrojax, we only serve long sloe comfortable schnitzel sangas at my restaurant, so obviously undress codes apply, but only to feet.

Unless you meant the ottoman in your loungeroom?! Hahaha! 😉

Wow! In winter too? Thongs are OK but I don’t wear them everyday and for every occasion!

What’s the problem with wearing thongs to a restaurant? I eat at the ottoman at least twice a month and I wear my havianas every time. It’s only bogans who think you need to look the part when eating out somewhere nice. Relax, life is beautiful
what’s an ‘aphorism’? why did i write that? freudian? anyway, ‘euphemism’, of course…

‘a quick schnitzel’, the new aphorism? i like it… a schnitzel on a roll never sounded so good. provided you’re not wearing your thong of course!

I was referring more to the contemptuous tone of many of the commenters to the very concept of thongs. Stuffy.
+1 to what Mysterman said. Scruffs begone, if you want to wear thongs, have a BBQ in the park.
So a pair of shoes makes one of those revolting clubs a respectable venue.

Making this a Canberra thing is not relevant really.
The weird thing about this OP (and why it seems like a bit of a wind-up) is:
1) The post title (and complaining about low-quality food when ‘dressing down’) is begging for people to retaliate – especially on RA.
2) Their first port of call was a licenced club (perhaps indicating that they were members?). I would then assume that they had been there before, so should have a basic idea of the simple ‘rules’, and not have been surprised.
As for Canberra-bashing, any licenced ‘pokie’ club I have been to in the last ten years in Aus basically has these same basic dress rules. They’re not specific to Canberra, and shouldn’t be a massive shock to anyone who walks in in thongs, I would have thought?
And i’m sure there’s people all around Aus who would complain about thongs in these places (as well as people would woulbn’t mind either way – just like in Cbr).
BTW, I personally think you *can* get a good meal at a pub/club – not every meal has to be Micehelin-starred to be worth eating and enjoying….
Our local does some great bistro food. Add a few cold, crisp (and cheap!) tap beers and it’s all good! 😛

I’ll be buggered – I agree with you. Possibly even whole-heartedly.

Probably the other patrons who don’t want to eat with a group of poorly dressed slobs? I know the current trend these days is “screw everyone else and do whatever you want”, but I’m glad there are establishments that still enforce dress codes. Most social conventions exist for a reason. It wouldn’t kill individuals to make a bit of effort, rather than expecting the rest of society to tolerate their laziness/inconsiderate behaviour/unjustified sense of entitlement.
I’m with the OP on this.
Canberrans can be incredibly stuffy people at times.
I remember having dinner in one pub in QLD where the footwear code was limited to: “No bare feet. Thongs must be worn inside.” At the door to the pub was a big bucket of odd thongs that the shoeless could wear in order to gain entrance.
Who gives two s***s what you wear on your feet, the color of your money is the same as everyone else’s.
