Whether your home boasts sweeping lawns or a small front garden, or perhaps you just want to keep your nature strip healthy and maintained, or perhaps you run your own lawn mowing and gardening service – whatever the case, lawn mowing is an important chore, and we need to be able to rely on our lawn mowers to stay on top of it.

Unfortunately, every now and again your mower may run into an issue that makes it unusable – broken down motors, dirty filters, disconnected spark plugs can all cause your mower to stop working. If this is the case for you, it’s probably time to take it to a lawn mower repair shop.

But what should you look for in a quality lawn mower repair service? You’ve come to the right place – in this article, we’ll take you through some of the most important things to consider when hiring someone to repair your lawn mower, as well as a helpful guide to Canberra’s most trusted services.

What makes a great lawn mower repair service?

Lawn mower repair is a complicated and very important job, so you want to be sure your repair service is offering a fair and quality service and advice. Keep these traits in mind as you conduct your search:

  • Experience. As with any skill, the more practice and experience, the better. Look for a service that has years of experience behind them, so that you know that they’ll be able to detect and diagnose any problems and follow-up with an effective and long-lasting solution.
  • Specialist knowledge. Different brands of lawn mower use different parts, and therefore need special attention and know-how in order to be repaired effectively. A great lawn mower repair service will have a team of qualified technicians who are able to service your mower, no matter its make.
  • Affordable prices. Cost is always a significant factor when it comes to selecting a lawn mower repair company, but you don’t want the process to cost you an arm and a leg – look for a service that offers transparent and competitive prices.
  • Fast turnaround. As well as money, you want to save time – being without a lawn mower for too long can be a pain, and any good lawn mower repair service will be aware of this and work to get your mower back to you as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't my lawn mower starting?

There are a few issues that your lawn mower might be having that's causing a break down, such as a bad fuel filter, a dirty or disconnected spark plug, or a dirt air filter. If you can't manage to get it started on your own, consider taking your mower to a professional repair service.

What brand of lawn mower is the best?

There are several great and popular brands of lawn mower that many repair services in Canberra specialise in and even stock - consider Toro, Honda, Stihl or Victa, who all offer a great range of both petrol and electric mowers.

What is the lifespan of a lawn mower?

The average lifespan of a lawn mower is 8-10 years with proper maintenance and care - this includes a few repairs and services, and it can be shortened depending on how much use the lawn mower gets. So, if you take good care of your mower, expect to have it for a long time!

How regularly should I mow my lawn?

Depending on how much rain and sunlight your lawn gets, you should probably aim to have your lawn mowed once every 4-6 weeks. If you do it too often, your lawn may need additional irrigation to recover. A lawn that is left too long may be especially difficult to mow, and growth will become irregular and uneven.

Do I have to mow the nature strip in front of my home?

In the ACT, it is accepted practice for the owner of the adjacent property to mow and maintain the nature strip. If you wish to do any landscaping, you must seek permission from the local council. However, if you don't regularly mow your nature strip and let it become overgrown, you may receive a notice from your local council asking you to do so ASAP.

For a quick DIY, simply empty the mower of fuel and put fresh 97 premium in it. Simple and possibly effective because today’s petrols have a nasty habit of going bad after a few months and not good for an engine once they do. My mower is always empty because the stuff evaporates so fast even with the lid on.

Mower services booked out for weeks. Can you tell if I need to do anything other than replace the fuel – i.e. Spark plugs etc?

If it starts then the spark plugs are not a problem. Try cleaning the carburetor and air filter. So many lawnmower problems start and end with a dirty carburetor.

Make sure you know whether it’s a 2 or 4 stroke engine before you go replacing fuel too – don’t want to go making things worse!

Just did a drive down Sternberg Crescent and found the phone number of mower repair mechanic.

His number is 0428546619.

Thanks Deborah for other repair recommendation. I’ll check him out also.

I highly recommend the Kambah Mower Centre – 6231 2703 – all my friends and family use them for service and repairs. They’re at the back of the Woolworths Petrol Station on the corner of Drakeford Drive and Marconi Crescent.

I’ll take a run out to Tuggeranong – handy to her in Weston – and ask him to repair it. I remember now that this chap had been recommended before. He sounds great.
Thank you everyone.

Oh the fecking IRONY!!

Thanks to the advice given above by mp2615, we visited Dusty art Jammo markets this morning. We bought a decent 4 stroke mower off him for $150, with a bit of warranty. Lovely old chap, obviously making a few bob in retirement and all strength to his elbow for that.

On the way home we realised that we could purchase a mower off him every six months, and still pay less than we paid for ONE SERVICE at Canberra Mower Services.

I second the Scullin shops guy with two big thumbs up. We bought a 2nd hand mower from him, and his follow up service was excellent! I some how managed to get a heap of water in the fuel tank, and took it to him complaining it was broken. He spent 20 minutes working out the problem and syphoning out the water. He also fixed a knob thing that I broke without me pointing it out, and he refused to take any money!! That’s good after sales service.

The small service station in macgregor appears to do lawn mowers, going by the customer I saw picking one up, and the friendly guy just did a good job with my wife’s car. They’re in the phone book.

Brain fade. Should read “Two-stroke FUEL in a four-stroke…”

I found the lawnmower repair place at the old petrol station at Scullin shops to be good. They seem to have a thing for French cars as well.

I believe this web site is great at fixing anything step by step.

No kidding, try Youtube! Mr Bad Seed had something or other go wrong with the lawn mower the other day and he looked it up on Youtube and yes, someone had a tutorial on how to fix that something or other and bingo, job done!

Nothing worse than having a chicken stuck in your spark plug. Kills the engine everytime.

Yeh, like Thumper says, don’t put a chicken in your lawn mower either. May have been a bit vague about that bit first time.

Bugger. I thought I had a chance to display the renowned LSWCHP wit, but no, too late. Maybe next time someone has a chook in their combustion chamber.

Do not use Canberra Mower Service Belconnen, kept my mower for over 2 months for a basic service, charged me $280 for it, it broke down straight after getting it home. Took it back in for repairs they kept it another month, it broke down straight after geting it home.

I avoid them also. I dropped a mower in for a service – 220 dollars later I took it home gobsmacked at the amount. A week or so later i went to use it and it wouldnt start. I took it back and they had the hide to charge me to look at my non-starting mower. Never again. They also annoyingly shifted the starter rope/handle up onto the handle for some bizarre reason.

There’s a guy who repairs lawn mowers and bikes in Bradfield Street, Downer. Just near the bustop – he usually has a sign up.

why not just do it yourself? would be a little bit of fun, and you’d learn something about engines. imho it would be a great weekend project

I think google/youtube would help.

Take it to the guy at the Jamo market on Sunday morning. he is a whiz. Dusty Is his name I think

Not sure which side of town you’re on, but i took mine to Tuggeranong Mowers the other week. Dropped it off in the morning and got it back by lunchtime like it was brand new. Works out of his garage at home in Kambah. 6296 3036

there’s a small business mower fixer in Wanniassa just near the corner of Fincham Street and Sternberg Cres. He does a few local ones.

Two-stroke engine in a four-stroke won’t damage the engine, but the other way around could be disasterous. As stated, check the plug isnt fouled and clean out the two-stroke fuel.

That aside there used to be a great small motor mechanic at Scullin shops. Not sure if he is still operating though.

Check the spark plug is not fowled because of the oil in the 2 stroke, and also that the exhaust is not obstructed by soot from the oil from the two stroke.
