Best of Canberra – Ice cream

By Sophia Carlini - 13 January 2015 19

Ice-Cream-on-Cone-A

Ice cream is an all occasions food. Whether it’s a hot Summer’s day at the pool with your friends or you need comforting after you just broke up with your boyfriend (forget him, he was a loser anyway!). There just never seems to be a wrong time for ice cream.

As a kid, vanilla was my go to flavour. ALWAYS! But as I got older, I decided to be a little more adventurous and branch out to chocolate. And well now, now I appreciate all of the flavours; cotton candy, banana, coffee, caramel, choc chip, double choc, strawberry … the list goes on.

My favourite ice cream at this very moment is the new Kangaroo Island Honey and Pistachio Magnum. Oh Em Gee! It is amazing!

So tell me, where is and what is Canberra’s best ice cream?

What’s Your opinion?

Does Goodberry’s count? Because not much beats Goodberry’s with cheesecake and Oreo. mmm

Goodberry’s? Really!

I think you need to read the other suggestions here and broaden your horizons. 😉

Hopefully, your taste buds will thank you for it. If not, then I’m afraid you can’t be helped.

Just because I enjoy something so ‘low brow’ as Goodberrys doesn’t mean my icecream horizons are narrow. I just enjoy the taste of chocolate goodberry’s custard with as much calories as I can shove into it.

Occasionally I prefer my icecream with a bit less hipster than is standard these days.

Sometimes you just need a cheap delicious sugary treat. And if Goodberry’s were so terrible I’m sure it wouldn’t exist anymore. Every time I go it’s packed though.

Stripey Sundae at Gold Creek do some beautiful flavours…..never considered Rosemary as an Ice Cream flavor until I tried it…to die for!

The best was Lic Gelato in Braddon, but when the chook shop opened, they didn’t last long in the other side. No idea whether they set up elsewhere.

Second to that, I’d say the one in Mitchell behind the carwash, can’t remember the name.

I went to Frugii last night to taste this salted butter caramel I keep hearing about. It was good, it tasted like toffee. But controversially I still prefer the coconut rough ice cream at Ethiopia Down Under.

John would probably have a crack at a Golden Rough ice cream if you asked him.

His gin & tonic sorbet is cracking.

Frugii !!!

I love Frugii icecream and he’s all over Canberra – Stripey Sundae and EPIC Farmer’s Markets are where I shop for his delights and John launches his new dessert store in the Ori Building Braddon TOMORROW !

My favourites are the Coconut Sorbet, Blood Orange Sorbet and Salted Butter Caramel. At Christmas the Pavlova ice cream and Gingerbread icecream were to die for.

I must admit that I’ve only ever tried gelatissimo outside of homemade. It’s not bad and certainly tastes like the flavours they purport to be. The Manuka one is not as nice as buying it on Manly Wharf and watching the ferries come and go!

I reckon you can get as good results at home with an ice cream maker. Strawberry and basil was my most way out concoction and it was really nice.

For my son I just freeze bananas (not over ripe ones) and then whizz up the still frozen pieces into something similar to softserve. He loves it and really believes he’s getting ice-cream. You can also do this with mango and similar textured fruits.

This is going to sound obscure but stay with me… Ethiopia Down Under at Pearce shops. They make all their ice cream in-house – the coconut rough ice cream is to die for. Best ice cream I’ve ever had.

Frugii, hands down. All made locally and the flavours are amazing (think peach pavlova, pear cider sorbet, turkish delight… and the flavours change all the time).

I’ve tried Frugii ice cream more times than I’d care to admit at the Farmer’s Markets, but I think that John (the guy behind Frugii) is actually opening a dessert laboratory at the Lonsdale Street Traders this week too.

The best is Pure Gelato in Mitchell.

The worst is Dolce and Salato in Civic.
