Canberra Airport is adding more than 1,000 square metres of new retail, food and beverage destinations, completely overhauling its retail terminal in the western and southern concourses in 2019.

On the Western Concourse, otherwise known as the International end, a new cafe, City Hill Coffee, will serve Canberra’s favourite ONA coffee near the main atrium’s Unfurling sculpture.

There will also be a health food offering and new restaurant Noodles XO which will serve Asian noodle dishes and sushi.

New food and beverage options, like Noodle XO, is landing soon in the Canberra Airport main terminal.

The Southern Concourse’s Limestone Bar, Tuk Shop and Hudson coffee will be replaced by Canberra’s very own Capital Brewing Co. Bar to offer travellers something to ease their nerves before flying.

The airport will also redevelop its retail section on the ground floor, with new retail store News@CBR to offer news, books and everyday travel essentials.

Following the opening of News@CBR, a second store called Merchant Canberra will be opened to showcase iconic gifts from Canberra and the surrounding region.

Construction will begin in coming months and stores will be introduced in two stages, with stage one finishing by the end of this year and stage two being completed by Easter 2020.

Canberra Airport’s Head of Property Richard Snow said the redevelopment had a clear focus on local food and locally-made gifts that showcase Canberra and the surrounding regions.

“We are excited about these new partnerships as we work through the last piece in our terminal puzzle,” Mr Snow said. “We have worked for years, focusing on making the travel experience for Canberrans and our visitors as seamless and efficient as possible.

“Now we are proud to be able to add in more restaurants and cafe options as well as retail that helps visitors remember their trip with local produce and gifts.”

Mr Snow said the retail offering was designed to show the rest of the world what Canberra has to offer.

“The key to the new retail offering is a connection to Canberra, a connection to the local suppliers, artisans and businesses that make this city great,” he said.

“The options we have chosen will make the airport a travel and food destination and a great place to showcase the fresh, local food and locally-made gifts that come from Canberra and the surrounding region.

“It is our goal to continue to help the economic development of our region while showing the rest of Australia and the world the unique things we offer.”

Mr Snow said that after a competitive market tender process, Airport Retail Enterprises was awarded the food and beverage component of the new terminal retail, while Australian Way Pty Ltd has been charged with the news, books and gifting component.

More Canberrans will never experience these indulgences than the ones that do. It highlights the growing gulf between the rich and poor in our city where average weekly wages (for some) are over $90K pa.

When most of us can afford to travel these days to Sydney it is by the Explorer train on which the food is expensive also. The budget can sometimes extend to a non-craft meat pie and tea-bag in a warm cup of water, however. Count your blessings.

That'll be great, if I could afford to fly out of it.

My burger for a direct flight to/from New Zealand!

A coffee shop that stays open past 5.30 would be good, for when you are meeting a plane.

Thank goodness, Canberra airport has no soul and is very sterile. A choice of eateries will be great.

The most noisy airport in the world! Where are the accoustic architects? London Airport with 10 times more people is quieter.

Also ONA Coffee.

Bron Lovejoy James Ansell etc etc hungry jacks time?

10:32 pm 12 Jul 19

It's needed. Especially if they want the flight options to be expanding. Right now, the airport is nice and shiny and International worthy but the food and retail options are poor.

What we need is low cost airlines here...double the price to go to Cairns from Canberra compared to Sydney.

Erin Davidson why they get all fancy in Canberra. Just put in a hungry Jacks and be done with it 😂

7:11 pm 12 Jul 19

What took so long?? Not everyone has a lounge membership and the existing options are bloody expensive.

7:04 pm 12 Jul 19

Now for lower prices and much much lower airfares. Its currently cheaper to fly to NZ business class from Perth than it is from Canberra - an absolute joke.

6:58 pm 12 Jul 19

Let the Old Canberra Inn open up an airport bar there
