Canberra’s newest national sporting team, the Canberra Cavalry, will have a multicultural look when it takes to the field for the inaugural season of the Australian Baseball League (ABL).
The Cavalry’s inaugural 35 man squad will feature 18 Australians, 6 Koreans, 3 Americans, a Canadian, Dutchman, an Italian and an Indian, with 4 still to be confirmed.
12 Canberran’s will be on the roster including Hayden Beard, Steve Kent, Michael Collins, Jason Sloan and Kyle Perkins, all returning from their American teams to represent Canberra.
The Cavalry’s Korean imports all hail from the Lotte Giants franchise, finishing fourth in the recent Korean Baseball Organisation season. The Korean powerhouse will provide the Cavalry with a catcher, an outfielder, an infielder and three pitchers.
The squad features eight Major League Baseball contracted players, two each from the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds and one each from the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves.
The Cavalry will contest 40 games throughout the home and away season, its first game being against the Sydney Blue Sox, 7.30pm on Saturday 6 November at Blacktown Olympic Stadium.
Canberra’s first of 20 home games at the newly renovated Narrabundah Baseball Park will be against the Melbourne Aces on Thursday 18 November from 7.00pm.
