Canberra thieves follow the money

The Canberra Times has the happy news that our criminal classes are smart enough, and mobile enough, to head towards the lush and leafy 2603 postcode.

ACT Policing figures show homes in postcode 2603, spanning leafy inner south suburbs, have proportionately been the most preyed upon by burglars for three years. Residents reported 26.5 dwelling burglaries per 1000 head of population last financial year.

The next most burgled 2609 (Fyshwick) only had 14 per thousand.

Here endeth the lesson: Trash beget trash. Not exclusively, or deterministically, of course, but as a general rule….

The sad truth is that Canberra enjoyed unnaturally low crime rates last century because the population was mostly hand-picked. But some trash crept in on their coat-tails, and inevitably the least sexually responsible are breeding faster.

Exactly the same reason why within another 200 years, on present ABS trends, this will once again be a majority indigenous country.

A very potent narrative, yet one our exceedingly timid media would never dare touch. Not for some decades yet, when the trend is more obvious, anyhow…

If the Courts actually looked at burglary as the serious offence it is the stats would go down pretty quick.

Although politically incorrect, it is naive to think that poverty and crime don’t go hand in hand. Sure, there are good people living in guvvie housing, but an awful lot of scumbags too.

I recently spent some time working at Canberra Times. They have just had a new journalism machine installed. Its really great cause all you have to do is feed in some statistics to the data filter, wind the processing handle and the machine fires up. Its got a whistle and this spinning wheel and every 30 seconds something goes “parp”. After 3 “parps”, you select the the ‘blame factor’ and press the presumption matrix crystal and the machine spits out a correctly spelt, nicley formatted piece of newsprint.

Its amazing.

Too right, Up The Duffy. Junkies can burgle to their hearts’ contents without having to wander more than a couple of blocks.

Gee, criminals burgling houses in areas most likely to yield valuable goods. Who would have thought it? What breathtaking “scoop” will the Canberra Times come up with next?
