Canberra to be Scuttled by Victorians

By RiotPost - 27 August 2009 14

On September 12 2009 Canberra is going under. The now decommissioned HMAS Canberra that is.The HMAS Canberra being towed out by tugs

The Brisbane Times informs us (nothing from our local rage that I could find) that the second RAN ship to go by the name Canberra is to be scuttled off Victorian waters to become a divers paradise. The Victorians seem to be over the moon with this with the Victorian Artificial Reef Society (VARF) having set up a website dedicated to the Canberra, holding a ball in honour of the sinking and containing a far more detailed history and statistics page than any I could find on wiki or on the Royal Australian Navy’s own site.

It seems the VARF put a lot of effort into lobbying to get HMAS Canberra sunk as a diving reef off their coast. It just seems a pity that with a reasonably strong diving community here in Canberra we didn’t have the fore-thought to have out namesake scuttled in Javis Jervis Bay to have our own divers paradise.

What’s Your opinion?

What a waste of a perfectly good warship.

Couldn’t the Aust Govt have donated it to some Third World nation, like NZ for instance?

Just what NZ needs. Another out of date, rusty warship to soak up it’s limited taxpayer funds.

Then we’d have to form the Friends of Jervis Bay and go and protest. And who knows what Stanhope would try and sneak in whilst we’re away

I’d like to see it shipped to canberra and placed on LBG near Kingston as a floating restaurant and night club venue.

You know it makes sense…

I’ll pay for it, if you push it up the Clyde mountain!

HMAS Canberra (III) will be one of the new Spanish-designed LHDs that the RAN is going to recieve in the next few years.

You say LHD, I say aircraft carrier.

Geez JB, don’t you let anyone in the USN or RN hear you calling those ships carriers – they’ll crucify you! 🙂

‘Real’ carriers don’t carry troops and landing barges…..

Surely the current scrap metal price demands it be cut up and sold off?

Having said that – I reckon military hardware should be used to boost tourism wherever possible. Look at the sub in the middle of Holbrook. A boon for the locals!

Thumper 10:27 am 27 Aug 09

Well, Holbrook has a submarine…

Yeah +1 for Jervis Bay – maintain the ACT link.

It should be scuttled as a divers paradise in LBG just in front of Old Parliament House!

WOW that would look so cool!

Love the title! And I think we should start lobbying now to have the third HMAS Canberra scuttled in Jervis Bay. Anyone know of any plans to build HMAS Canberra III so we can scuttle it?

Javis Bay? Is that some weed/carp/rubbish infested place in the Lake?
