Canberran Gets 3 Yellow cards in World Cup Soccer

Just to throw a bit of locality into the world cup frey Josip Simunic playing for Croatia born in Canberra… earned himself THREE yellow cards in the Socceroos Match against Croatia this morning. Normally two yellows results in a player being sent off.

Not being a massive soccer buff I don’t know if anything like this has happened before… but he probably should have had another one early on in the match when he rugby tackled Australian Captain Mark Viduka in the goal box. We shall await what FIFA has to say about it.

Anyway the end result of 2 all was a good result for the Aussies, granting them the opportunity to play in the next round of 16 nations.

More game details can be read here

It’s a serious offence to ‘handle’ a referee but this is the World Cup and I think it’s more a case of carte blanche for the tournament.

We are lucky that the referee did not rule Harry offside !!!

I know in other codes of football that you are not allowed to lay a finger on the ref, but in the games of Soccer I have seen… does this rule not apply to soccer?

Just got this off ninemsn:

Sumunic was then given the dubious honour of being booked for a third time in the game. He was sent off in the final minute, Oddly enough, no record of the second booking appeared in the official match report. Coincidentally, the same thing happened in Australia’s final group game in the 1974 World Cup.

That explains why Simunic didn’t go off. Bloody ridiculous to tell you the truth. He did lay hands on the ref too. I would have sent him packing after that one.

he fell out of favour with an old socceroos coach in a big way didn’t he. Top player though.. one of aussies best for years.

And of course fellow SBS analyst Ned Zelic is also a Canberra lad. He’s a former Canberra Deakin player.

he he you know your history Stan but we all hate Rale as well – remember the poll on Andy’s legendary Cosmos http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Goal/8219/
(Do links format okay on here?)

Some more Canberra connections for you:

Vinnie Grella began his professional career as a 16 year old with the mighty Canberra Cosmos.

Mark Viduka, Craig Moore and Josip Skoko all went to Lake Ginninderra Collge.

More tenous: Jason Culina’s Dad Branco is a former Canberra Cosmos coach, as is SBS Analyst Rale Rasic…although if you read Rale’s biography, you’ll know he’s less than complimentary about his time in the Capital.

Well, some people do get a little emotional when they can see their career slipping through their fingers!

he just reeked of arrogance that guy… didn’t he touch the ref at some stage as well after getting carded…. I’m pretty sure that was sloppy jo..

Arrogant AND self-centred? That’s an unusual combination to find in a Croation male. 😉

Yes that was a nice touch Danman 🙂

Loved the game. Hated the rugby tackle on Viduka and “hand of God” moment from Croatia – another Maradona there perhaps?

Ref from Japan-Aust game screwed USA over against Ghana too. I think he’ll be looked into by FIFA.

I hope Joe gets a HUGE fine for playing on when he was red-carded.

I went all through high school and college with Jo. He was an arrogant self centred prick back then. Granted I was not as fine a citizen back then that I am now, but I am not surprised to see that he has not changed in any way. Tough luck for training with AIS for a few years, moving to croatia to play for them ( apparently they had more of a future in soccer ) and then gettin kicked out of the worlds grandest football competition by a team who he thought was not good enough for him. Oh the humanity. LOL brought a smile to my face at 630 am today 🙂

well he obviously doesn’t mind guys who touch their balls public… so could be the same…

The Ref wasn’t the same bloke that let Hargreaves off on a drink-driving charge, was it????

the ref was appalling.

The scarey thing is kimba… these boys are playing without the experience of the teams who have done it all before. Throw that in they won’t be giant killers… but giants themselves… lets hope it snowballs..

We should have recieved one for the hand ball directly in front of the goal too. The ref lost control of the game in the last few minutes. Two balls on the pitch, a player with two yellow cards allowed to play… A shabby performance indeed.

But we go through… so thats the main thing!

What another great ‘morning’ for Australian football. Pleased that Josip got red-carded…he’s a traitor anyway.

It doesn’t matter what happens from here…the sleeping giant has rose!!!

Interesting that many non-soccer supporters are saying they have never seen or experienced anything like what is presently happening with the Socceroos.

Get along to Bruce on the 22nd July AD and see an ‘A league’ pre season game. If it’s well attended it’ll help any bid for an A league side in Canberra. I imagine there’s a few happy soccer fans around town this morning apart from the sad few around Deakin who support a foreign team….
