Ever wondered how you’d really perform in a zombie apocalypse? Here’s your chance.

Mind-bending mysteries, space battles, undead invasions and pirate-infested jungles await at Zero Latency VR, a brand new virtual reality gaming experience in Canberra’s north.

With seven games on the bill, including well-known favourites and exclusive titles, owner Luis Lopez says there’s something for everyone, whether you’re a veteran gamer or just looking to try something new.

“Our titles include Sol Raiders, Space Marine VR, Outbreak, Engineerium, Singularity, Farcry VR and Undead Arena,” he says.

“Such a range means we can cater to a variety of interests, and although most of our games are for ages 13 and up, our Engineerium experience is a great option for younger kids to explore with their parents.”

Each experience hosts one to eight players, leading them on a 30-minute journey of unmatched action and exploration. After a quick introduction and safety briefing, you’re equipped with a headset and gun controller before being led into an arena the size of a tennis court.

There are no tethers or backpacks stifling your movement here, it’s simply you and your wits.

Trending at the moment are Outbreak, a cooperative shooter experience that takes you through a death-defying mission to protect the cure that will save humankind, and Space Marine VR, a sci-fi exclusive where you play a genetically enhanced super-soldier fighting against alien swarms.

Both titles leave players with an adrenaline rush so strong it takes a hot minute to come back to reality once the mission is over.

The team has thought of every minute detail, from instinctive controls and all-encompassing sound to in-game safety mechanisms that alert players when they’re too close to a teammate or a wall.

“The immersion you experience with Zero Latency tech is miles ahead of other systems,” Luis says.

“We’ve had to step in and walk people across high-rise sections with their eyes closed because it feels so real.

“Unlike home systems like Oculus or even those used in other gaming centres, our VR is designed to give you free rein. And since you’re physically moving around a huge arena, your body and brain won’t react with a motion sickness response.”

Zero Latency VR in Canberra is set above long-time community hub, Jolt Games, which was opened by Luis a decade ago.

Stepping through the front doors is a bit of a dream: shelves are chock full of board games, card games, role-playing and strategy titles, nostalgic classics and more. Beyond the retail space are the community tables, usually occupied by Luis’s regulars.

“As a family-owned and operated business, we’re not just about selling games. We’re about building communities and creating a safe and inclusive space to game,” Luis says.

“Jolt Games is a second home for the team and our regular community members who appreciate the opportunity to gather and play together for free.

“It’s my hope that Zero Latency VR builds on our wonderful hub, attracting a diverse range of gamers and introducing them to the joy that modern gaming technology can bring.”
